Today, we live in a world where almost everything revolves around technology. The way businesses, transactions, health concerns, and relationships work now rely on and use technology. The internet, in particular, is one of the ground-breaking developments over the decades that changed how we live.

If you look at the people around you, you’ll see most are holding onto their smartphones for work, entertainment, communication, and more. Indeed, technology and the internet make life easier and better. However, many researchers have found that too much access to unnecessary online information disrupts people’s health.

One of the possible effects of too much technology is eye strain, depression, hearing loss, neck strain, and more. On top of that, the unrealistic beauty and lifestyle standards that many share online can be detrimental to people’s mental health and happiness. That’s why it’s beneficial to have a technology break when possible.

Since we now have unlimited access to endless information online, it’s healthy for our minds and bodies to take a break from technology. In this post, let’s discuss some fun activities you can do if you plan to have a technology break.

1 - Learn a manual activity that technology can do instantly today.

One of the best things about today’s technology is its ability to do activities that used to be tedious before. Some are picture taking, film processing, and writing letters to long-distance recipients. With our smartphones, we can now take pictures conveniently, print photos with portable printers, and send emails anywhere in the world.

Today, you can do those three activities without leaving the comforts of your home or wherever you are. I bet most of us, especially the younger generations, are unaware that the convenience we’re experiencing today used to be time-consuming. Even if you’re aware, why don’t you learn a manual activity that technology today can do instantly?

It can be a 1-day or 3-day workshop about film processing, manual picture-taking, or other activities you find interesting.

2 - Exercise and get sweating

Another activity to help you enjoy your technology break is exercise. Do you notice the time you spend mindlessly scrolling on your phone? According to research, excessive use of technology leads to physical inactivity.

Because of that, many find it hard to stick to an active and healthy lifestyle. If you relate, I recommend making the most of your break by committing to an active lifestyle. You can start with low-intensity workouts or yoga exercises if you’re a beginner. You can also try or revisit a sport you used to love. Whatever type of workout you choose to start, savour and make the most out of it.

3 - Communicate in person with the people that matter to you.

Today, even people living in the same house communicate using their smartphones. I mentioned earlier that excessive technology promotes physical inactivity. Hence, people today are lazy to stand up and talk with the people they live with verbally. Instead, they use their smartphones to send messages to deliver what they want to say.

If you’re also guilty, I highly suggest taking this break to communicate deeply with the people that matter to you. Sadly, many people today base their feelings and connections with the people they love on the conversations they have online. The thing is, relationships take time to work. And digital communication will never be as meaningful as a personal one. If you relate to this, communicate with them during your break.

4 - Finish a book or two.

Another activity that technology has disrupted many to do regularly is to finish reading a book. Today, the attention span of most people only lasts for 8.25 seconds. If you notice, many people online don’t even finish reading a post they’re reading or don’t even try to understand a post or news article they see.

As a result, the spread of disinformation is continuously increasing today. Of course, there are millions of things you can learn online. However, learning from finishing a book is still different. If you haven’t finished reading the book you promised yourself to read months or years ago, take your break to do so.

5 - Declutter your home.

Many people find delaying their home chores due to internet and technology use. As I mentioned, scrolling mindlessly on your phone consumes so much time. It also leads people to delay and postpone their house chores.

If you also relate, use your break to declutter your home. By doing so, you might find the things you’ve been looking for for months or years. You might also discover some items you no longer need or never thought you had. Doing this will surely be a fun way to organise your home.

6 - Travel to an area or country you’ve never been to.

Another fun activity that you can do during your technology break is ‌travel. I know that travelling is a luxury and a privilege because of its cost. However, you don’t need to go abroad to start travelling. You can simply begin by exploring ‌the areas near you that you haven’t explored before.

Many say travelling is the best form of education and therapy for your soul. Yes, it may be true that you no longer need to spend money to discover and see what other places can offer with the Internet. But experiencing different cultures and having new experiences is one of the best things you can do for yourself. So whether it is exploring the city next to your hometown or visiting a foreign country, grab it while you can.

7 - Write something by hand.

Lastly, write something by hand. Today, many people rely on technology for spelling and grammar corrections, and even I am guilty of this. As I’ve been saying, technology makes our lives easier. However, it also makes us dependent on it in many areas of life.

Because of that, there are times when writing by hand becomes difficult because we’re used to typing everything and relying on technology to correct our spelling, grammar, and punctuation. I recommend writing anything by hand if you haven’t done so in a long time. You don’t have to be cautious with your grammar and spelling. Just try to write naturally, then refer to technology afterwards for corrections and checking.

Any activity you love will do, as long as it does not involve technology or internet use.

Activities that do not involve technology or the internet will help you slow down and enjoy life without relying too much on them. If you plan to take a technology break, you can try these seven activities for a start. If you don’t like these, you can do any activity you love, as long as it does not involve technology or internet use. Happy tech-free week!
