Planning a long car journey? Make these essential checks to keep you and your passengers safe and happy all the way there.

Vehicle checks

Well ahead of your journey, make sure your vehicle is in good working condition. Essential checks include:

1. Tyres

Check that your tread depth meets the legal requirements – this is essential for grip in bad weather. You can assess tread depth using a 20p coin or enquire at your local garage.

You must also top up your tyre pressure at your local petrol station, especially if you're ferrying a heavy load. You can fill up with fuel at the same time.

2. Fluids

Look at the level of your oil, engine coolant, brake fluid and screenwash and top up anything low.

3. Lights

Walk around your car (or ask someone to do it for you) and check your headlamps and brake lights are working.

Make sure you know how to use your headlamp functions like full beam and fog in case of unlit roads and inclement weather.

Driving preparation

Once you've ensured that the car is in good working order, focus on driving preparation.

1. Share the drive

Think about who will be driving and for how far. For longer journeys, it's best to be accompanied by another licensed driver and look into a short-term car insurance policy so they can share the drive.

2. Plan the route

Set the sat nav with your destination and find the right page on the map as well in case the device lets you down unexpectedly. Your phone should be set to do not disturb to ensure no distractions when you're on the road.

3. Safety tips

Ensure you have water and energising snacks to help you stay alert while driving. Plan regular rest stops during your journey and don't hesitate to pause if you get tired. Remind yourself of the guidance for driving on motorways especially if you're a relatively new driver.

4. Documentation

Keep all essential documentation close at hand, in your bag or the glove compartment. This should include your licence, insurance details and breakdown cover information.

Packing list

Finally, put together a packing list of the in-car essentials so you don't forget anything important on the day!

Entertainment

Think about car entertainment, especially if you are travelling with little ones. Options include listening to music, the radio, an audiobook or a podcast. Remember to consider what you're comfortable listening to while driving and don't be afraid to turn it off when you need to.

Emergencies

We don't like to think about it, but accidents can happen. Prepare for emergencies by ensuring you have a warning triangle, blankets, a shovel and ice scraper and a supply of food and drinks. A fully-stocked first-aid kit should be included too, as well as a portable charger to top up your smartphone.
