Ellen DeGeneres did not simply instruct people to be nice. She told precisely what that is. Ellen once said "I stand for honesty, equality, kindness, compassion, treating people the way you want to be treated, and helping those in need. To me, those are traditional values".
Read that again. Those aren't just nice words. That is a full instruction of the way to live. Honesty. Equality. Compassion. Do to others what you wish done to you. These words are so easy to say, but how many of us do this on a daily basis?
Another statement that Ellen made that counters the way most comedy works "Most comedy is based on getting a laugh at somebody else's expense. And I find that that's just a form of bullying in a major way. So I want to be an example that you can be funny and be kind, and make people laugh without hurting somebody else's feelings."
That's powerful. She proved that you do not need to bring people down to pick yourself up. You can be funny without being mean. You do not need to make other people suffer to be successful. Her entire life became the evidence of kind-heartedness and success existing together.
Learning From Hard Times
After 2020, Ellen DeGeneres quietly recalibrated the way she talked about kindness, shifting from a catchphrase to something more reflective and grounded. In interviews and public appearances, she acknowledged that kindness isn’t just a brand or a slogan, but something you have to practice intentionally, especially when you’ve fallen short. That honesty resonated with a lot of people. Over time, many fans forgave her, feeling that she had taken responsibility and grown, and they largely moved on from the controversy that once dominated the conversation.
Although Ellen is entering a new stage of her life, her message has not changed. She is still discussing kindness. She is still trying to make people smile. She has demonstrated to us that you don’t need a talk show to get the good stuff around. All you have to do is show kindness to and around people.
Her experience becomes something significant. It is possible to do good things even with mistakes. You may be in a bad mood and still make a decision to be kind. No one is perfect and that is alright. All that counts is that you do not give up.
The Memory Test: What Will People Remember?
An interesting question here is this. What do you think people will remember about you ten years down the line? Do they recall what car you drove? Probably not. Will they think about which color your dress was at parties and functions? Likely. But they will not forget the way you made them feel.
People remember kindness. They recollect the one who paid attention to them when all the rest were too busy. They recall those who appeared to them during difficult times. They remember who manages them in the manner that they are important even in a disagreement.
Any taking you do and engage in, is writing your character in the memory of another person. What character would you rather leave? The response to that question determines the treatment of people in the present day.
Kindness as a Superpower Nobody Talks About
We are in a success-crazed world. Everybody desires to become smarter, richer or more famous. However, there is a superpower in the crowd that most of us fail to notice and that is the power to make someone happier by simply being nice to them.
Talent and money are not necessarily part of this superpower. You do not require any special training. You already have all you need to make use of. Whether you will or not, is the question.
Magical things occur when you apply this power. Doors open that were closed. When you need help people are there to help you. Opportunities appear because the good deed will bring real relationships. And relationships are so powerful that they can move mountains.
Rather than fighting the narrative, Ellen leaned into it by emphasizing empathy, accountability, and grace, both for others and for herself. Her post-show presence felt less performative and more human, reminding audiences that kindness includes allowing room for mistakes and second chances. That perspective helped soften public perception, and many longtime supporters chose to forgive her, seeing the chapter as closed and the controversy as something firmly in the past.
The Stranger Test: Would You Say It to Your Face?
People are using social media to escape real life and they have forgotten the existence of real people behind the screen. We write the things we would not dare say to a person on strangers posts, reel and videos and feel they are doing a great job. We share our views without considering others' opinions.
Before commenting or posting, You should always ask yourself; Would I say this to some stranger next to me on a bus? before you write something bad about someone or some group of people? In case the answer is no, then do not post it.
This is not about self-discipline. It is remembering that words are heavy. They are able to uplift or bring down people. And when you say it, you can never get them back.
What Kids Learn From Watching Us
Children are like sponges. They grasp all that surrounds them. When we are nice to the waiter in a restaurant, he or she notices. When we assist a neighbor, he or she sees. Children are able to hear when we address strangers badly behind their backs.
To make sure that kids become kind, we must show them what kind actions are like in real life. Not only when it is easy, but when it is difficult. Not only to individuals we like, but to all.
The manner in which we manage conflicts educates them on how to manage theirs. The manner in which we treat strangers reflects on how they should treat strangers. We are writing the script of how the next generation will behave. What story do we want to tell?
Your Choice Every Day
No one can force you to be kind. It is not something that can be forced upon you. It’s your decision which you are in full control of every single minute.
On some days, such a decision will be simple. On other days it will seem impossible. Nevertheless, it is always at your control. However the events taking place around you, you will always have a choice on how you treat people.
Ellen DeGeneres spent her career reminding people of this fact. Despite all the ups and downs, the good times and bad, she always chooses to return with the same message. Be kind to one another. It's simple but powerful.
That message is relevant when you are reading this post as much as it was on the first day of her show. Maybe even more. The world feels heavier now. Human beings require love more than ever.
So make that choice. When you feel good, be nice, and when you feel bad, be nice. Choose kindness when it is deserved by people and also when you do not agree with another person.
Since it is kindness that makes us be related at the end of the day. It's what makes us human. It is the reason why life is worth living.
And it all starts with you.
