Do you want to become more environmentally-focused in your life? Sometimes it sounds too much like hard work, or you might not know where to start. But there are always a lot of different options you can try, and, over time, you could make a real difference.
As well as being good for the planet, which is reason enough to be more sustainable, a lot of these lifestyle choices are also better for us as individuals. They might save money or even help us to be healthier. So, here are a few simple ways to be more environmentally friendly in your everyday life.
1. Ditch the Car
Okay, you don’t have to completely get rid of your car. But personal vehicles are a huge contributor to our carbon footprint. So you could reduce how much you use your car.
While public transportation isn’t glamorous, it is convenient, more environmentally friendly, and often relatively cheap to use. This is especially true in certain cities with a heavy investment in public transportation. You can also save on parking, fuel, and if you get a regular ticket, it doesn’t cost as much as you might think.
You can also consider walking or cycling more to cover short distances. This is a great exercise, and it means you don’t need to drive around.
2. Solar Power at Home
Electricity is a fact of life. We need to heat and light up our homes, so it’s a necessary evil to use fossil fuels, right?
Well, you can take more control over your electricity by getting a solar installer to put panels on your home. As well as giving you access to a cleaner and more renewable energy source, you can also save lots of money over time, as you don’t need to rely on outside sources of electricity.
You can sell excess electricity back to the grid or store it for use at night.
3. Reusable Items
Sometimes the smallest changes can have a big impact. If you try to use reusable items instead of single-use plastic, you can reduce the amount of waste your household produces.
For example, getting canvas bags for shopping is great because they’re sturdy, they last for ages, and they look much nicer than plastic bags. You can also use glass storage containers and refill them when possible, or even beeswax wraps instead of cling film to help you preserve food. Just wash and reuse rather than chucking them out when you’re done.
4. Growing Food at Home
We need to eat to live, but do we need to get everything from the supermarket? If you have a bit of land, you can grow some of your own food. This tastes amazing and is so satisfying, but even better, you don’t need to buy food that’s stored in plastic and that has been shipped from other parts of the world.
You can start as small as you like. Even growing herbs on your windowsill is a nice way to add a bit of flavor to your food and to do a little bit for the planet.
