Both involve cold. Both are used for recovery, inflammation, and mental wellbeing. And both have real advocates who swear by the results. But cryotherapy and cold water immersion work in different ways, and if you are deciding between them, the distinction matters more than most people realise.
What Cryotherapy Actually Is
Whole-body cryotherapy (WBC) involves standing in a chamber or cabin filled with extremely cold air, typically between -110C and -160C, for two to four minutes. The temperatures sound dramatic, and they are. But air, even very cold air, is a poor conductor of heat. Your body does not lose heat to it quickly.
This is the key point that often gets lost in comparisons: temperature alone does not determine intensity. The medium matters.
Why Water Wins on Thermal Intensity
Water conducts heat away from the body approximately 25 times faster than air at the same temperature. This means a cold water plunge at 10C creates a significantly more intense physiological response than a cryotherapy chamber at -130C.

Accessibility: Cryotherapy requires visiting a facility. Sessions are typically priced per visit, and the cost adds up quickly for anyone aiming to use it three to five times per week. Cold water immersion can be done at home, on your own schedule, for a fraction of the long-term cost.
Duration: Cryotherapy sessions are two to four minutes by necessity, as the extreme cold makes longer exposure unsafe. Cold water immersion sessions are typically ten to fifteen minutes, which gives the body more time to respond and adapt.
Privacy and convenience: For the benefits of cryotherapy to accrue through consistency, you need regular access. A home ice bath gives you that access without booking, travel, or shared equipment.
The Case for Cold Water at Home
For most people who are not professional athletes with facility access paid for by a club or employer, cold water immersion at home is the more realistic route to consistent cold therapy. The thermal intensity is higher, the cost per session is lower over time, and the habit is far easier to maintain when the setup is in your own space.
