There are several hundred thousand roads in the world. Most of them are relatively safe and comfortable for traveling on any transport. In parallel with them, some roads kill and maim people every day. They are considered the most terrible on the planet, and every driver tries to avoid them. Let's look at these dear ones together and discover their main secrets.
Killar-Pangi (India)
On this famous road, owners of new cars, as well as models purchased at salvage yards in Huntsville, AL and other US cities, will never feel safe. It is located above a cliff and has a very complex coating consisting of gravel and stones. The route length is 114 km, and every meter is dangerous. At some points, the road rises so high that in case of a fall, the driver will have to fly down with his car for more than 2.5 km. In theory, Killar-Pangi can be made a safe route. However, no one wants to do this and spend money on laying asphalt, installing fences, and placing warning signs.
North Yungas (Bolivia)
One of the most terrible is the so-called “Death Road”. It is almost 80 km long and connects the city of Coroico with the capital of Bolivia, La Paz. Here, danger awaits drivers literally every kilometer. Two hundred tricky turns on the road must be negotiated at minimum speed. There are also many straight sections where the gravel surface is only 3-3.5 meters wide. In all these places, there is a high probability of falling off a cliff and ending your life in the Amazon forests below. Relatively recently, the Bolivian authorities built a bypass road. Despite this, North Yungas continues to be popular with people who love extreme skiing.
Zoji La Pass (India)
This pass through the Himalayas is an extreme road that is hard to beat. Here, for 9 km, there is no single fence or road sign warning of danger. However, on the Zoji La Pass, there are many sharp turns and narrow, straight sections, and any careless steering wheel movement can lead to a fall from a great height. Extreme weather further complicates the situation. Due to the location of the pass, the paved road is blown by strong winds and is abundantly watered with rainwater almost every day. It is covered with snow in winter and becomes completely unsuitable for traffic. All of the above makes Zoji La Pass a deadly pass that has claimed the lives of many locals and visitors who love to ride on extreme roads.
Guoliang Tunnel (China)
This famous tunnel was built in the Taihang Mountains many years ago. He helped connect the small village with nearby communities. All 1.2 kilometers of the road run along a cliff, with no barriers other than natural rock formations. The latter are found only on a few sections of the route, so they cannot protect drivers from the risk of falling. In those places where cars have to drive through a tunnel, a collapse can occur at any second. If people survive in such a situation, they will most likely be left without a chance to get out of the stone trap on their own. All of the above makes the Guoliang tunnel the most dangerous road, which is best avoided.
Sichuan-Tibet (China)
Among the most terrible roads on our planet, the leader in terms of length is Sichuan-Tibet. Its length is 2140 kilometers, where drivers are constantly exposed to danger. The main problem here is the wet dirt road. Due to constant rainfall, it never dries out, so it becomes as slippery as ice. Also adding to the problem is the high probability of landslides and rockfalls, which can instantly end your trip. Sichuan-Tibet is one of the few roads in China where mortality statistics are kept. It is 75 people for every 1000 people passing. These dire numbers demonstrate the dangers of the route, so you should carefully consider the possible risks before trying it yourself.
Many drivers are unaware of dozens of challenging and scary roads driving along well-paved trails, highways, and freeways. They are present in different parts of our planet and cause human deaths every day. If this doesn't scare you, try riding them from start to finish. At the same time, be extremely careful and remember that we only have one life.
